Polyurethane Roller Sleeves for Conveyor Applications
Slip-on polyurethane covers for the rollers already in your conveyor
Specify a polyurethane contact surface around the rollers already in your conveyor. A roller sleeve is a separate tubular component fitted over a roller body; its dimensions and retention method must suit the roller and the operating conditions.

Roller sleeves, bonded covers or complete rollers?
The terms roller cover and roller sleeve are sometimes used interchangeably. Confirm how the polyurethane attaches to the roller before specifying a replacement.
| Option | Construction | What to establish |
|---|---|---|
| Separate roller sleeve | A tubular cover fitted over the roller body | Compatible roller dimensions, installation access and retention method |
| Bonded polyurethane covering | Polyurethane bonded to a prepared core | Core condition, bond requirements and finished geometry |
| Complete polyurethane roller | Roller supplied as a finished component | Shaft or bore details, mounting arrangement and operating requirements |
If your existing cover is bonded to its core, explore Willsup’s custom polyurethane rollers and recovering services. A separate sleeve should be evaluated against the assembly’s design rather than assumed to be interchangeable with a bonded covering.
How to specify polyurethane roller sleeve dimensions
Begin with the metal roller’s outside diameter and the length of the surface that needs covering. Include the required finished outside diameter and any clearance limitations in the conveyor.
The sleeve’s free inside diameter and the roller’s outside diameter are separate dimensions. Their relationship must be defined for the selected material and mounting method. Do not assume that matching the two nominal diameters will produce the required fit.
| Information | Details to send |
|---|---|
| Roller body | Outside diameter, face length, material and surface condition |
| Required covering | Covered length, finished outside diameter and drawing tolerances |
| Existing sleeve | Free dimensions where measurable, material information and wear photographs |
| Conveyor layout | Available clearance and access to the end of the roller |
| Operation | Roller speed, loading, duty cycle and conveyed material |
| Environment | Temperature, moisture, oils and cleaning products |
| Order | Quantity, delivery location and target date |
Select the material around the application
The appropriate polyurethane formulation depends on more than hardness. Contact conditions, speed, loading and exposure must be considered together.
For handling finished products, specify the contact surface and acceptable marking limits. For traction requirements, describe the conveyed material and any moisture or contamination. For an existing sleeve that wears prematurely, provide photographs and explain where and how the damage develops.
Read our polyurethane Shore hardness guide for background, then supply the operating information needed to review the material selection.
Plan the installation before ordering
Installation access is part of the specification. Identify whether the roller can be removed, whether shafts or bearings obstruct either end, and how the sleeve is retained during operation.
Confirm the installation procedure for the supplied sleeve, including any permitted installation aids, preparation requirements and final inspection criteria. Procedures for another manufacturer’s sleeve may not apply to a different formulation or fit.

Polyurethane roller sleeve questions
-
Is a roller sleeve the same as roller recovering?
No. A sleeve is supplied as a separate tubular cover. Recovering generally involves removing an existing covering and applying a replacement to the core. Confirm the construction of your roller before selecting the replacement route. -
Will a polyurethane sleeve fit any conveyor roller?
Fit depends on the roller dimensions, sleeve design, material and mounting arrangement. Send the actual roller measurements and assembly details for review rather than selecting on nominal diameter alone. -
Which Shore hardness should I choose?
Hardness is one input alongside load, speed, contact surface and environmental exposure. If the current hardness is unknown, provide a sample or the existing specification and describe the performance required. -
Can I specify a sleeve for food-contact equipment?
State the intended contact and cleaning conditions in the enquiry. Any required compliance must be confirmed for the specific formulation and intended use; polyurethane as a material name does not establish food-contact suitability. -
What information is needed for a quotation?
Provide the roller outside diameter, covered length, desired finished diameter, operating conditions and quantity. Drawings and photographs help clarify mounting access, clearances and the condition of the existing roller.
